Eco-Friendly Foresight from the Start

Recently opened in April 2009, Valentina is a brand-new concept for the hospitality industry. In the earliest planning stages, owners Bob and Toni wanted to maximize energy-efficiency, and made sure there was no unnecessary waste. As a Natural Resource Mananagement graduate, Bob Pringle understood the impact of the construction industry on the environment, and researched all the possible sustainable alternatives for materials and technology. Bob also took special care in choosing the right contractor for the construction of Valentina Inn & Villas. Specialty Construction was very keen on reducing quantities of building materials, resources, and energy. Likewise, Specialty recycled materials such as drywall whenever posssible. As such, Valentina significantly minimized waste and maintained a sustainable construction model for other hotels to follow. Every luxurious villa is as spacious as a luxury condo, yet is less energy-consuming than the average hotel suite. Valentina has gone through extensive measures to set the bar for sustainability in the hospitality industry. From the structure to the surface, Valentina has made use of environmentally –friendly technology.

Basic, Green Solutions
The thermal mass concrete on the second floor of Valentina is designed to hold temperature, thus limiting the use of heaters and fireplaces, and reducing energy consumption. Likewise, walls use R-19 insulation which are a higher standard of thermal regulation quality than the minimum code requirements. The roof is designed for thermal efficiency with white PVC membrane to maintain an ideal temperature range throughout the structure. Valentina also utilizes Loewen windows, which are made of douglas fir wood (a renewable resource), and are manufactured by sustainable practices. Moreover, they are empirically shown to be among the industry's best in terms of thermal performance. UV-protection awnings regulate the amount of heat transferred through the windows, eliminating the need for air conditioning in the summer and fall months.

Green Technology Meets Practicality
Valentina employs state of the art Navien tankless water heater systems in every villa. These are rated at 98% energy-efficiency and are extremely efficient with water. In addition, landscaping is low-consumption, with many drought-resistant succulents. All landscaping is on a self-monitoring drip system, and pavers in the exterior parking lot allow for clean drainage. Valentina guests are provided the convenience of GE Profile™ Energy Star appliances in the kitchen (i.e. dishwasher), and in the utility room(i.e washer and dryer). As for the lighting, we have made extensive use of energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs (even before recent CA legislation was passed encouraging CFL usage). These use 33% of the electricity consumed with incandescent bulbs.



A Green Legacy
We encourage our guests to join in the green movement by conserving our natural resources. This does not mean that our guests should reduce their own comfort level. Rather, simple steps like turning off the fireplace when its not in use or separating recyclable waste into our recycle bin can significantly reduce consumption. We believe it's possible to stay "green" even when on vacation. By taking small measures, we can all save our fragile planet.
